Harley Davidson will give a keen competition to Royal Enfield by launching a 250 – 500 CC bikes in India


US-based Iconic Motorcycle Company Harley-Davidson is working on new strategies for other Asian markets including India. With the Strategic Alliance in Asia, Harley-Davidson is planning to develop 250-500CC motorcycles. In such a case, Harley-Davidson will compete with this Segment to Royal Enfield. However, it is not clear whether this alliance partner will be an Indian company. Till now it is not clear.

Entry in India

- In an Investor Communication, Harley-Davidson said that we want to do strategic alliance to launch 250-500cc motorcycles in Asia. The company is hoping to launch the bikes in two emerging markets of India and Asia within two years.

What did the company say

- Spokespersons of the company said that consumers are spending on premium products in China, India and South East Asia according to census. He said that India's 250-500 CC motorcycle segment could grow by 25% every year till 2021. We want to enter the market soon with the Strategic Alliance in Asia and want to increase brand and volume. Harley-Davidson also said that this step can reach the affordable price for premium Small Engine Market Entry.

Harley-Davidson -  Harley's sales fall in India

Harley's sales are falling in India. In the financial year 2018, the company's sales fell 7% to 3,413 units. Sales fell for the second consecutive year. Fiscal year 2017 saw a decline of 21% in these figures.
- During the April-June period of the financial year 2019, the company's sales fell 21% on yearly basis to 707 units.
- The best year for the company was in 2016. During this, the company sold 4,708 motorcycles.

- In India, the volume of 250-500cc segment is 8,33,112 (according to FY18 data). However, 96% of these data is with only one company i.e. Royal Enfield.

- Bajaj had launched Dominor to compete with Royal Enfield, but Dominant's share is only 2% in this segment.
